The Importance of Roof Ventilation

Roof Ventilation is a very important element of your roof. Many people refer to roof ventilation as attic ventilation because of the proximity of the roof to the attic. One of the effects of roof ventilation is a longer life for your roof. The reason being is that proper ventilation allows for the release of heat and humidity that can cause damage to the roof. The ventilation removes moisture and heat which is commonly trapped in your home’s roof. In some cases condensation can cause leakage in your roof.

When done improperly, roof ventilation can cause many problems. These problems may include:

  • Sumps between rafters
  • Condensation of water vapor to any metal inside the attic
  • Frost on the roof deck during winter seasons
  • Mildew causing health problems
  • Deterioration of the roofing system

There are many types of roof ventilators. These includes:

  • power vents
  • static vents
  • ridge vents
  • cornice vents
  • turbine vents
  • gable vents
  • cupola vents
  • starter vents.

The ventilation capacities differ depending on the how the roof was built, the climate and even the roof size.

There are two types of roof ventilators that are needed for proper ventilation. These are intake vents and exhaust vents. The intake vents are found in the down slope of the roof’s edge while the exhaust vents are near the roof’s ridge line. Occasionally the exhaust vent is located at the exact location of the ridge line. Exhaust vents normally use the natural force of wind pressure together with the thermal effect. This is known as the stack effect.

Many home owners have flat roof ventilation. This is a kind of roof ventilator which uses soil vent pipes, mechanical extract ventilation ducts or passive ventilation stacks. This kind of roof ventilator is very suitable for both warm and cold decks. Flat roof ventilation offers low resistance to airflow and is available as a ventilation unit.

Most types of roof ventilation use what is called roof ventilation fans. There are many kinds of these fans available in the marketplace. The most commonly used is the solar attic fan because it does not need electrical energy to work. Most products of this kind carry a lifetime warranty.
