How do gas wall heaters work? The simple answer is through the process of convection. By heating the air itself, wall gas heaters can gently raise the temperature of a room while still providing a great deal of comfort. Generally speaking, there are two main types of these heaters – models that pull in air from the outside and expel harmful fumes to the outdoors, and ventless heaters that simply draw air from the room in which it sits.

The original 1980s models of the ventless gas wall heaters lacked oxygen depletion sensors, a dangerous condition that would fail to warn occupants of critically low oxygen levels in the room. Most of these heaters, thankfully, are long gone – heaters tend to only last for around twenty years, and most have been replaced by this point. However, some of these heaters still exist in old homes – a dangerous condition that should be immediately rectified. Depletion of oxygen in a household can lead to many problems, not the least of which can be suffocation caused by a lack of air flowing in to the room from any external source.

There are a number of advantages to gas powered heaters. First and foremost, the heat output from the heater is quite stable – a true savings over electric heaters, which require more energy to heat the same amount of space. These heaters also keep running even in the case of a power outage, making them a great choice for those that live in areas that are often snowbound. Finally, these units are generally stand alone – no need for a boiler or other external device to make sure that the heat keeps going.

This said, there are disadvantages to gas wall heaters. The largest disadvantage is their lack of ability to heat an entire home – they are wonderful heating a single small room, but overly large spaces and homes are simply too much for these units to handle. Gas is also a bit more expensive than electricity, and a poor choice for those that are environmentally conscious. Natural gas wall heaters may be a better choice.
