MERV Rating or Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value Rating
This rating was created in 1987 to measure an air filter’s performance. MERV ratings range between 1 and 20, measuring particle sizes from less than 0.3 microns to greater than 10 microns. Air impurities that are less than 0.3 microns include virus, smoke, or carbon dust. Filters that can sieve very minute particles are often used in clean rooms, mainly for the production of pharmaceutical or electronic goods. Elements that are bigger than 10 microns include pollen, carpet or textile fibers, spray paint or sanding dust or dust mites. A good residential air filter will take care of such problems. In between are dust, spores, mold, bacteria, auto emission particles, and many others. In the MERV rating, highly efficient filters are given higher MERV ratings because this means that these types can filter more air particulates. To illustrate, a MERV rating of 1-4 will mean that a filter can only trap particles that are larger than 10 microns, while a MERV rating of 17-20 means that a filter can effectively block particles that are smaller than 0.3 microns.

Materials used in making filters greatly impact performance. There are essentially 4 types of filters, which are: paper, foam, cotton, and oil bath. Some of these air filters are created with pleats because the folds enable the device to trap and hold more particles per square inch. There are also filter materials that are electronically charged to attract and ensnare more particles. Though filters should be replaced once they have done their service, there are several kinds that can be washed and reused which are money-savers and environmentally friendly too.

It is important to choose the right type of air filters for house or space. A highly efficient filter will allow people to breathe in cleaner air and this will also protect HVAC systems better.
